A ‘Lucky’ Bastard I Am Proud Of!

This post is dedicated to one of my students who I am truly proud of! He is the typical example of how anyone , regardless or age and experience can realize their dreams if they simply just use the right strategies and take massive action. His name is Adam Wong.

Eight years ago, I was invited to give a talk at one of the Singapore polytechnics about achieving success in life to 500 final year students. At the end of my talk was a Q&A session. After replying to lots of typical questions from students, one student raised his hand to ask the final question of the day. On that fateful day, Adam Wong asked the question, ‘ Mr. Khoo, will you be my personal mentor?’

Now, at that time, I could not possibly say ‘no’ in front of 500 students looking on. I would have looked like a real ass! So I said ‘yes’, thinking that he probably wasn’t serious anyway. To my surprise, Adam Wong (AW) called me numerous times to allow him to come see me to ask questions about what to do with his life.

He asked me all sorts of questions like: ‘how do I get started?’ ‘how do I build confidence?’ ‘How do I make my first million?’ ‘How do I set myself apart?’. After answering as much as I could, I told him that if he really wanted to learn all my strategies, then he should sign up for my PATTERNS OF EXCELLENCE program. Sure enough, he borrowed the few thousand from his parents and attended the entire program. At the end of it, he even borrowed more money to attend my Wealth Academy program in 2005.

What really impressed me about AW was that after the programs, he took massive action and applied everything I taught him, He did not hesitate at all. He decided that he did not want to get stuck in a normal 9am-5pm job like everyone else and eventually decided that he would become an entrepreneur as an Internet Marketer. Most important, he was willing to pay the price.

When he applied himself whole heartedly, the results he got were truly inspiring. Within two weeks of launching his business, he generated US$10,011 worth of sales. Within a year and a half, he hit a record US$21,154 a month in December. He continued to build his online business until today, it generates a six figure income while he just works four hours a day from his home.

All his friends call him a LUCKY BASTARD to have such a great life with a great income. So, he decided to write a book (which honestly is a VERY GOOD READ) to teach people exactly how he did it and how anyone can achieve the same success he has on the Internet.

Although I will say that AW is a LUCKY BASTARD, he created his own luck! I believe we all create our own luck through the choices we make and the actions we take. The harder you work, the luckier you get. 8 years ago, in that polytechnic class of 500 students, anyone of them could have been the lucky one to be mentored by me. They ALL had the same opportunity. What made AW lucky was that he took action on the opportunity.

Here is a chance for you to download the first chapter FREE and see how great his book really is. So go and create your own luck by grabbing opportunities whenever they come!!!!

The History of the ‘I Am Gifted!’ (IAG) Programme by Adam Khoo

The ‘I Am Gifted!’ Programme was first created by Adam Khoo who was inspired to share with students the winning attitudes and learning strategies he had used to transform himself from an underachieving teenager to among the top 1% of academic achievers in the National University of Singapore.

As one of the pioneers in the NUS’s Gifted Program (known as the Talent Development Programme- TDP), Adam realized that being gifted was not just an in-born trait reserved for a privileged few. By studying the habits of ‘gifted students’ and through his research in Neuroscience, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Multiple Intelligence, Adam discovered that every child had the potential to achieve extraordinary results with the right encouragement, stimulation and learning methods.

‘I Am Gifted’ reflects the belief that all children are born gifted. All children have within them god-given gifts of learning, self-expression, leadership, creativity and so on. The ‘I Am Gifted’ programme was specially designed to fully nurture these gifts within each child.

Although the ‘I Am Gifted’ was officially launched in 2002, the seeds for this life transformational programme were planted way back 18 years ago in 1990. At the age of 16, Adam started writing and distributing articles on memory building techniques, self-motivation and speed-reading skills etc among his friends with eagerness to help them improve their grades. His articles were even published in Teenage Magazine. By the age of 23, he was already engaged by many top schools (including Raffles Institution, the former Chinese High School and Victoria Junior College) to prepare their students for the National Examinations.

A year later at the age of 24, Adam made news headlines when his first book “I Am Gifted, So Are You!™” topped the National Best Sellers list, beating international titles like ‘7 Habits of Highly Effective People’. ‘ I Am Gifted, So Are You!’ was also endorsed by learning expert Tony Buzan, the inventor of Mind Mapping™.

In 2002, Adam roped in NLP Trainer & Counselor, Stuart Tan to launch the ‘I Am Gifted’ Programme. Stuart, like Adam is one of the Singapore Educational System’s Success Stories. A Slow Starter, he was particularly a very shy boy and a weak student. However, through various personal development courses, he became a top student in his class at SJI and President of his Junior College’s student council.

Today, Stuart is an NUS graduate (majoring in psychology and linguistics), a Master NLP Trainer, a Certified Counselor, author of five books and a Champion Toast Master Speaker. The ‘I Am Gifted Team’ was soon joined by Brain-Based Teaching expert Gary Lee. Gary was also another former average student who went on to top his class at St. Andrews School and graduated from the National University of Singapore, thereby becoming one of the few Asians to be certified in Brain-Based Teaching by leading brain researcher Eric Jensen.

In Adam’s own words, “We realized that there were a lot of kids out there, who, like us had the potential to become successful but lacked role models who would give them the confidence, right mindsets and effective strategies to realize their gifts. Although there were a lot of student enrichment programmes around, many were taught by foreigners who had little understanding of the Singapore educational system or were taught by ex-teachers who sometimes could not connect with average and underperforming students.

This is what inspired us to create the ultimate personal development programme to address the needs of all kids of students: from the top achievers to the under performers.

Over the last seven years, the ‘I Am Gifted’ programe has gone on to empower the lives of over 330,000 students and 15,000 parents in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, China, Hong Kong and Thailand.

We have also been proud to be constantly engaged by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in Singapore and Hong Kong, the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled (MINDS), Singapore Prison School, SINDA and the Chinese Development Assistance Council (CDAC). With such overwhelming support from the public, it has now become Asia’s Leading Academic and Life-Skills based Personal Development Programme.

In 2008, The ‘I Am Gifted’ programme will be launched for the very first time in Holland, reinforcing the fact that it truly is a Singaporean brand spreading across the globe.

Bad Things Must Happen to You… For Good Things to Happen

As many of us are feeling the repercussions of one of the worst recessions in recent history, I would like to share with you my philosophy on the EQUATION OF LIFE. If you studied Math, Chemistry, Economics, Accounts or any one of these mathematical topics before, you would understand that equations have to balance.

For every good, there must be a bad. For every positive, there must first be a negative. For light to exist, there must first be darkness. For every market boom, there must first be a crash. For you to experience happiness, you must first experience sadness. For you to experience pride and inspiration, you must first have experienced disappointment and adversity. The greater the initial failure and disappointment, the sweeter will be the pride of success.

I remember watching the show ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’ where it was based on the true story of Chris Gardner who went through a very difficult period of his life. His wife left him, he was broke, evicted from his home, slept in public toilets and in homeless shelter, jailed for unpaid parking tickets and went through a series of unfortunate incidents. However, he persevered where ordinary men would have given up. Finally, when he got selected to become a stockbroker in one of the most prestigious companies on Wall Street after competing against 20 other candidates, he broke down and shed tears of intense pride and happiness. The fighting spirit that the tough situations built within him was what gave him the drive to build a multi-million dollar stock broking firm himself. If he did not first go through those heartbreaking setbacks, he would not have become a millionaire.

For there to be God, there must be the devil (I know some religious people will want to kill me for saying this). Think about it, if not for pain, suffering and evil, will people turn to God for salvation? It is during hard times like these that people pray and go to places of worship more.

If you watched the matrix, the ‘architect’ mentions that the equation has to balance for the matrix to exist. In order for Neo (the Hero) to exist, there must be his opposite (i.e. Agent Smith who was the super bad guy).

This applies to every aspect of life. If George Bush did not screw up the US economy and damage the US’s reputation so badly, Barack Obama would not have become the first African American President today. If Al Gore would have won, he would probably have done an ok job and the US would have voted in another white guy. At the same time, if Al Gore had become the US President 8 years ago, he would not have made such a positive impact on global warming issues, won an academy award for his documentary and won the Nobel Peace Prize. Again, ‘failure’ led to the the birth of success.

If I did not get kicked out of Primary school (Primary 3) and get rejected from 6 secondary schools after my PSLE exams, I would never have been sent by my parents to learn about NLP. If I did not learn about NLP at the age of 13, I would not have been able to inspire thousands of students through my first book ‘I Am Gifted, So Are You!’ and achieve all the success that I have today. I would just have been another average Singaporean stuck in an average job.

So, how does this apply to your life? Well, instead of fearing and feeling lousy because of the bad stuff that happens in your life, get optimistic and know that there lies a great opportunity that always goes along with it.

The Lottery of Life – Would You Re-Draw?

Lots of people I meet complain that they don’t have the luck to achieve the success and wealth that they want. “If only I was luckier, life would be alot easier and I would be alot happier”, they would say. Many people pray of the day they could draw that lucky ticket and win that million dollar lottery that would change their life.

What many people do not realize is that the fact that they are comfortably reading this BLOG means that they have been lucky enough to be one of the few winners of the biggest lottery of all….the lottery of life! They were lucky enough to draw the ‘right ticket’ and be born where they are.

Imagine that 24 hours before you were born, God gave you a bowl of 100 tickets. You had to draw one ticket that would determine your sex, country of birth, wealth, intelligence etc.. What would have been your chance to end up where you are now?

Let;s look at the odds. If you were to take the entire earth’s population and shrink it to 100 people (represented by 100 tickets), with all existing human ratios the same, it would be made up of the following:

49 would be female, 51 would be male
80 would live in substandard housing. 20 in acceptable housing.
67 would be unable to read. Only 33 would be literate
1 would have a university education. 99 would not be able to attend university
50 would be malnourished and 1 dying of starvation
33 would be without access to a safe water supply
16 would have access to the Internet
17 would live in a developed country. 83 live in underdeveloped/developing countries

If you were given the chance to turn back time and go back to 24 hours before you were born, would you choose to return your current ticket and re-draw a new ticket from the 100 again? If not, then consider how lucky you are!

I Look Forward to Coaching You Towards Your Success in 2009!

My 2009 Schedule is out and I look forward to meeting you at one of my life transformational seminars! To look at my calendar of events, click on ‘MEET ADAM KHOO LIVE’

At the recession takes hold and people & businesses start to get defensive, you know that the way for you to get ahead is to use this opportunity to upgrade your skills & knowledge that will give you that COMPETITIVE EDGE!

Remember that your most valuable asset is not your house, your car, your stocks! Your most valuable asset is YOU!!! Your INTELLECTUAL ASSET. When you invest in yourself, your returns are not 10%, 20%, 30% or 50%, they are well over 1000% and they keep reaping dividends throughout your entire life!

The reason why many people never succeed is because of their wrong priorities. They major in the minor, unimportant, short-term things that don’t mean much and minor in the important things that would make the biggest difference in their life.

People would gladly spend money on new handphones, computer games, home furnishings, a new watch, jewelry, but they will think 10 times before investing in themselves. Funny right? I guess it is because the ‘handphone’ or ‘jewelry’ is tangible and it gives instant gratification. But investing in their education is intangible and it takes time to see the BENEFITS.

The other reason why many people never succeed is because they focus on feeding their bodies at least 3 times a day but fail to feed their mind as often. They know that if they don’t eat their lunch or dinner, they will starve of malnutrition. However, successful people know that as much as they feed their bodies, they have to feed their mind- reading books, attending seminars. If not, their bodies might be healthy, but their minds will starve of malnutrition and they will soon become obsolete.

So, if you are ready to invest in yourself and learn the strategies to help you achieve your goals in 2009 and beyond, register for one our FREE INTRODUCTORY PREVIEWS or call for us to send a brochure to you (Singapore: 65-62740105, Indonesia: (+62)215747511, Malaysia: (603)77250212) and get ready to change your life and your destiny!

A New Year Begins

Dear Friends, BLOG Readers, Past Participants, Loyal book readers and critics,

I would like to wish one and all a very successful, fulfilling and happy 2009!

Another whole year has passed like the blink of an eye and another new year begins. It is that time of the year where I do a very important ritual-exercise and I would like to share it with you and encourage you to do the same

I believe that at the beginning of a new year, it is important to audit the year that has just passed. Time to reflect and write down all the key accomplishments you have made, the important lessons you have learned and improvements you have made to yourself. I’ve always loved to listen to the old christmas song ‘So, this is Christmas- by John lennon’ where the lyrics go ‘So this is christmas, now what have you done? Another year over, a new one’s just begun…’

Ever since I was 15, I have been keeping a SUCCESS JOURNAL, where I write down all my achievements and insights for every year that has passed in my life. My philosophy is that if life is worth living, it is worth recording. This allows me to look back at my life for the last 19 years, year by year to see how I have grown and what I have achieved so far. Success is a process of continuously moving towards the goals you have set for in your life. So, if you do not keep a record of how you are progressing each year, then how do you measure your success?

At the same time, keeping this success journal is a way which I constantly motivate myself to keep going further. That’s right! Yours truly Adam Khoo also gets demoralized once in a while, so I need to motivate myself by reading all my past achievements and read all the letters of appreciation that people have sent to me.

I invite you to do the same thing! I invite you to share in this BLOG (through ‘comments’), what you have learned, achieved, improved in for 2008! Maybe I can start the ball rolling by sharing what is in my own 2008 Success Journal. In 2008, I am proud to have done the following:
1) Wrote ‘Nurturing the Winner & Genius in Your Child’ that hit #5 of the National Best-Seller’s list
2) Conferred the NUS Business School Eminent Alumni Award
3) Successfully Launched the First Millionaire Business Academy(MBA) Programme
4) Wrote the book ‘Secrets of Building Multi-Million Dollar Businesses’
5) Wrote the book ‘Profit from the Panic’ where all royalties will be donated to charity
6) Adam Khoo Learning Technologies Group Sales Revenue Hits Over $20 million & Employees surpass 100 people DESPITE the financial crisis!
7) Received the Toastmasters International Communications & Leadership Award
8) Officially Opened one of the largest training offices and venues in Jakarta
9) Successfully ran the first ‘I Am Gifted’ program for students in Hong Kong
10) Successfully ran the first ‘ I Am Gifted’ program for students in Bangkok
11) Featured in Young Parents magazine, Executive Magazine and the New Paper
12) My group of companies trained in total over 55,000 students, parents, teachers, entrepreneurs and working professionals in 6 countries
13) Brought my family to Korea for a great holiday
14) Put on 10 kg so I look just right (I was too skinny before)
15) Brought my children to the zoo 6 times, swimming every month, science centre > 3x, playground countless times. Helped teach my kids how to read, count, add & subtract (my wife did most of the work though)
16) Read 65 new books (including ‘Snowball’-Warren Buffett’s autobiography which is damn thick)

The next step, is to set specific, measurable goals with deadlines attached to them for the New Year. I am not talking about New Years Resolutions, but GOALS! Let me tell you why New Years Resolutions never seem to work. First, they are too vague, general and non-committal. For example a resolution like, ‘be a better person’ will not work. To make it a powerful goal, t could be stated like, ‘Do one good deed a week for a stranger’, ‘ pay sincere compliments to the people around me’ or ’stop complaining and criticizing’.

The other reason resolutions do not work is because people only write them down and look at them once. The next time they look at it (if they ever do) is one year later! In the meantime, they get so distracted and sidetracked by all the day to day demands of life that their resolutions are always shelved aside! For goals to work, you must
1) Write them down on a big piece of poster
2) Stick it up all over your home, work area, computer desktop
3 Make a public commitment by putting it up on your BLOG, facebook or telling your friends about it
4) Reading it out aloud EVERY MORNING when you wake up
5) Reflect upon them EVERY NIGHT before you sleep
You have to develop this as a HABIT just as you would brushing your teeth or bathing everyday (I hope you brush your teeth ; ) )

THIS is what it takes to ever achieve the goals you have set. So again, I invite you to share your goals in my blog. I will start the ball rolling my committing and declaring MY GOALS. So, if I don’t achieve them by end 2009, you can write in and laugh at me! (that will be MY motivation). Here are my 2009 Goals:
1) Launch new book ‘Secrets of Successful Teens’ by April 2009
2) Launch new book ‘ Secrets of Learning Geniuses’ by Sept 2009
3) Launch second edition of ‘Secrets of Self Made Millionaires’ by March 2009
4) Launch second edition of ‘Secrets of Millionaire Investors’ by March 2009
5) Invest in 3 more rental properties to take advantage of the crisis by Dec 2009
6) Adam Khoo Learning Technologies Group to reach out to and train more than 70,000 in 7 countries (about 40% increase over 2008) by Dec 2009
7) Start the third ‘Adam Khoo Learning Centre’ in Singapore by June 2009
8) Launch the ‘I Am Gifted’ program in Amsterdam, Holland by Oct 2009
9) Bring my family on a great vacation Aug 2009
10) Read 65 new books on self-improvement
11) Spend as much time as I can teaching my children how to improve their reading, writing and Math skills a d build up their self-confidence
12) Write ‘Secrets of REal Estate Millionaires’ by teaming up with the top real estate investors in Singapore

So, those are my goals for 2009! I hope I have inspired and challenged you to do the same!
